- Elizabeth Mahaffey Holter (1875-1958): I don't anything about her early days. She went through the Howard Schools and I think whe went to what they called normal schools. One was at Lock Haven where she prepared for teaching. We lived across the street from the schoolhouse and I watched the kids march out to the gate and start to yell and run. I made up my mind I was going to be in the building first and get the seat just inside the door and be the first one out. I got the back seat but she must have known what I was doing because she changed the marching and I was the last one out. The next year they had another teacher so I decided I would get the front seat and be the first one out. She changed the marching and I was the last one out again for a whole year. Well I fooled them. I passed the 3 years in 2. She stayed with us in Port Arthur a while but she didn't get along with you youngsters very well and went back to Howard. All I havewritten about were buried in Howard.
