    • Robert Bower Holter (1879-1913): Bower was a person with poor health. He didn't participate in sports and never got much exercise. He was a brilliant student. He was interested in newspaper work and spent most of his time growing up at the Howard Hustler, the weekly newspaper. He spent much of his time with church work. He also worked with the county papers, Democratic Watchman, Gazette, Centre County Republican and Crntre Democrat. He was well liked by every person. He married Julia Steele of Bellefonte and they had two children, William and Daniel. William was a very smart youngster. Uncle Sherman, your grandfather's brothe, came to our house every day and William would crawl up on his lap. He could count the buttons on his sweater before he was a year old. He wore a brace on his leg and drug it along instead of making a step. He died when he was 5 or 6 and they discovered his hip was out of joint. I don't know why the doctors couldn't discover it. Daniel had a radio and T.V. shop in Bellefonte from which he is now retired. He was a very good merchant. If you ever want to know anything about the Holter family, ask him because he kept records for years. Bower established a play banking system, which we mostly played after Sunday School. You couldn't play unless you went to Sunday School. There were five boys and Meda to play. Our property was assigned to different ones. The owner had to work it or feed the animals and had to pay taxes on it. For instance, one would own the cow. He had to keep the stable clean and see that the cow got milked. He got paid for this and all things were covered, garden, pigs, chickens, lot. All had an assessed value. For money we had a little printing press with which we printed our paper money. For gold coins we cut out yellow oil cloth and put the value on them. we played about 1 1/2 hours a week but we learned how property was handled. We like it.
