- Christie G. Bitner, 91, of Howard, passed away after a brief illness at his home on Sunday, July 7, 2024.
Born on Nov. 26, 1932, in Lock Haven, he was the son of the late Christie E. and Katherine L. (Bartholomew) Bitner. His childhood home was in Beech Creek.
On April 15, 1955, in Howard, he married Sarah J. Long.
Christie was of the Methodist Faith. He was a 1950 graduate of Lock Haven High School. He enlisted in the United States Army on March 3, 1953, and earned the rank of CPL before being discharged on Feb. 24, 1955. He received the OCC Medal Germany, Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Metal for his service.
After his service in the Army, Christie worked as a laborer for Piper Aircraft in Lock Haven. He was there 27 years before they closed. Christie was not one to “retire,” so he went to work at the Howard Elementary School as a custodian. He worked there for 25 years, retiring at the age of 78.
He was a member of the Howard VFW Post #8269 and the Beech Creek Legion Post #623.
Christie was involved in the Howard Community Plays. He always had the lead part. He enjoyed shopping, collecting multiple items such as Hess trucks and glassware. He had to take his daily trip around Howard, just to check on the town. He adored all the children that went through Howard Elementary School. He treated each one like his grandchildren.
His favorite thing in life was spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He treasured the time spent with them. He looked forward to all the family gatherings.
Christie is survived by his wife, Sarah; two daughters, Wanda J. Nyman, and her husband, Mike, of Howard, and Karen J. Walk, and her husband, Brian, of Port Matilda. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Jared Nyman, Jordan Nyman (Amanda) and Alyssa Barlup (Dan); and five great-grandchildren, Jack Nyman, Hank Nyman, Conner Nyman, Morgan Nyman and Ava Barlup.
Along with his parents, Christie was preceded in death by three brothers, Sheldon Bitner, Stanley Bitner and Richard Bitner; and five sisters, Edith McMurtrie, Dorothy Rupert, Ila Jean Hatalski, Claire Miller and Connie Rickert.
Following Christie’s wishes, all services will be private. He will be laid to rest at Schenck’s Cemetery in Howard Twp.
