- A leading and influential citizen of Howard, Centre County, PA. Proprietor of The Howard Handle and Spoke Company. Widely and favorably known throughout The community. During his boyhood he worked on his Family's farm. He was in The Postal Service on The Pennsylvania and Erie Railroad between Williamsport and Erie for 3 years after starting out in life for himself. For t atime he was also operator for The Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad at New Castle Junction, Lawrence County, PA. The business of which he became proprietor was organized by Shutt & Poulson in 1879. In 1893 William purchased an interest from K. G. Shutt (his brother-in-law) and served as manager. It was one of The leading industries of The locality and much of its success was due to William, whose courteous treatment of patrons and honorable dealing insured future prosperity.
