Surrounded by his loving wife and all his children, Lee F. "Tuff" Gardner, 78, of Howard, passed away Jan. 3, 2014 at Centre Crest.
He was a son of the late Donald B. and Pearl M. (Pletcher) Gardner.
He was a 1953 graduate of Bald Eagle Area High School.
Tuff served in the United States Army and was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Unit.
He was employed 41 years at the Hammermill paper mill in Lock Haven. He was the Howard Borough tax collector for 32 years.
Tuff was a well-known local high school athlete, participating in football, basketball and baseball.
He belonged to the Howard VFW Post 8269 and the Beech Creek Legion and was active in the Howard Fire Company for many years.
Tuff was an avid outdoorsman and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. He loved to spend time at his camp, Fern Hollow, in Snow Shoe.
Tuff is survived by his wife of 57 years and high school sweetheart, Dot. He is also survived by two daughters, Chris Dolan (Nevin) of Howard and Nicole Rigg (Will) of Bellefonte; two sons, Duane Gardner (Deb) and Tracy Gardner (Barb), both of Howard; along with grandchildren Jesse, Emily, Ben, Clayton, Bryce and Coleman.
As the last surviving member of his family, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Donnie, Ted, Bill, Bob; four sisters, Sis Redline, Viv Preston, Barb Isenberg and Dot Justice; and a granddaughter, Becky Irvin.
The family will receive friends at the Howard United Methodist Church, Main Street, on Monday, Jan. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. Services will be held at the church on Tuesday at 11 a.m., followed by interment at Schenck's Cemetery in Howard.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Tuff may be given to the Rebecca Irvin Memorial Scholarship Fund, Howard United Methodist Church, 144 W. Main St., Howard, Pa. 16841.
