- Bertha R. "Bertie" Allison, 103, formerly of Howard, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the Eagle Valley Personal Care Home in Milesburg.
Born on July 11, 1908, in Howard, she was the daughter of the late Sumner and Carrie Louella Wolf.
Bertha was a 1926 graduate of the Howard High School and a 1928 graduate of the Lock Haven Normal School.
Bertha and her husband, Joseph R. Allison, who had been the former mayor of the borough of Howard and past District Governor of the Pennsylvania Lions Clubs of District 14-G, had been married 56 years before he passed away on March 9, 1997.
Bertha was respected by all of her peers. She had taught school for 44 years, 41 of which were in the Howard Elementary School. She had also taught in Marion and Spring Township schools. Along with teaching, she assisted her husband in his store, where she mastered the making of the "Joe Allison Sub."
Prior to its closing, she had been a pillar in the former St. John's Methodist Church in Howard, where she had been an active member. Most currently, she was a member of the Lighthouse Reformed Church in Howard.
She was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, National Education Retired Teachers Association, the Howard Civic Club, the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and a charter member of the Howard Historical Society. She loved teaching and helping others. She was an avid pet lover.
One of her highlights in life was, after finding out that she was the oldest living person in Howard, being honored at a Howard Festival Parade by being the Parade Marshal and being crowned Queen of Howard.
Along with her parents and husband, Bertha was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Pezick and brother, Kline R. Wolf. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Kader-Neff Funeral Home, 135 W. Main St, Howard. Funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Craig Rose officiating. Burial will follow at Schenck's Cemetery, Howard Township.
