Biography of the Late James Welsh.
Mr. James Welsh who died at Flemington on the 9th instant, was born March 8, 1802. He was the son of Jared Welsh and the youngest of twelve children which are now all dead. He was born on what was then known as Monseytown Bottom about two miles above the city of Lock Haven on the north side of the river where his father located about the year 1784. His father moved from Cumberland County, Pa. But few opportunities were enjoyed by him at that time. He attended school a short time at Dunnstown and a few terms at the log school house that stood near the old Lock Haven burying ground. Up to 1841 he was engaged in lumbering on the West Branch. At that date he located on what was called the Richard farm on the south side of the Bald Eagle creek opposite Flemington. In connection with farming he conducted the lumbering business. In 1837 he was married to a daughter of Nathan McCloskey by whom he had eleven children, six of whom survive him. After her death, he married the widow of David Shank, of Howard, by whom two children were born to him, both now dead. Mr. Welsh was one of the best pilots on the Susquehanna; he was thoroughly acquainted with every part of the river from Lock Haven to tidewater. For nine years he was County Commissioner and Clinton county has had no Commissioner his superior. He was strictly honest and vigilantly guarded every interest of the county. In all his business transactions his word was as good as his bond. No man stood higher to the estimation of his neighbors than he. He was a consistent member of the Great Island Presbyterian church. Mr. Welsh was seriously troubled with cancer and in June 1881, went to Rome, New York state, and had an operation performed which gave him relief for a short time, but the disease returned and he died from its effects. The funeral takes place from his late residence at 10 o’clock Friday. Burial at the old burying ground on the hill.
Rev. Nesbitt, assisted by Rev. Cares, conducted the services of the late James Welsh at Flemington Friday. As deceased was a man who had many friends, his funeral was largely attended. The following named gentlemen acted as pall bearers: Wallis Kitchen, Joseph Paul, Joseph Allbee, Joel Keller, and Charles Kyle.
