Obituary |
- Donald R. Oyler, 88, of Lemoyne and formerly of Harrisburg and Hummelstown, went to meet Jesus surrounded by the love of his family on January 19, 2021 at the Gardens of West Shore Rehab due to complications from COVID-19.
Don was born in Howard, PA to Milford & Madeline Oyler. He attended Hummelstown High and was a member of the Army serving Korea. He was a lifetime member of the Hershey VFW Post 3502. He retired from DLA Defense Distribution Region East Mechanicsburg as a Supervisor. Afterwards, he worked for Cremation Society of PA. While living in Hummelstown, in his younger years, he was the former owner of Oyler’s Taxi Service, a policeman, fireman, and ambulance driver. He served on Hummelstown Borough Council and established the 1st Civil Service for the police force. He was a Sanctioned and Lay speaker of United Methodist Churches.
He was an avid Penn State and Green Bay Packers fan. Enjoyed reading, old westerns, desserts, playing pinochle and 500 Rummy. At age 80 he became a serious-minded artist. Enjoyed spending time with family and had a deep devotion to God. He will be fondly remembered for always smiling, laughing, and joking with others.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Louise H. Oyler; his step-mother, Delphia Wentzel Oyler; a brother Glen Oyler; and a sister Faye Parana.
He is survived by his companion Lorraine Bean (and Cricket); a son, Dan Oyler (Debbie) of Cleona; two daughters, Cindy Oyler of TN, and Tammy Poffenberger (Greg) of Camp Hill; five grandchildren, Chris Hyde (Lauren), Jason Weller (Maureen), Cody Weller, Devan Walker (Chris), Janna Poffenberger (Joel); six great grandchildren; and three nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
Don was a firm believer in contributing to charities. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, 3908 Corey Road, Harrisburg, PA 17109.
Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc. are handling the funeral arrangements, and Cremation Society of PA is handling the cremation arrangements.
