- Dr. John A. Holter, 72, died Friday at Mercy Hospital in Portland.
He was born in Jefferson, Md., a son of Cecil K. Holter Sr. and Elsie Remsberg Holter.
He was a 1943 graduate of Middletown High School and went on to receive a bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Maryland.
He served in the Army, and was stationed in Europe during the Korean War.
He attended Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., where he was awarded master's and doctoral degrees in animal nutrition.
Dr. Holter is a former faculty member of Beaver Country Day School in Boston.
Upon moving to Maine, he became a member of the Development Committee for the New Division of Nasson College in Springvale. After his career in education he became an active partner in Holter-Roberts Antiques in Wells and later Maine-Le Crafts in Boothbay Harbor. At the time of his death his business had spread throughout New England.
He was interested in music, antiques, art, drama and farming, and had extensive knowledge of purebred cattle. His most recent interest was a farm in Sanford where he held a partnership, and he enjoyed spending as much time there as possible.
He was the lifelong friend and partner of William A. Roberts of Sanford.
Surviving are two brothers, C.K. of Frederick, Md., and Richard of Jefferson, Md.; five nephews; and one niece.
A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. A public memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
