- Mrs. Van Scoyoc entered into rest at the residence of her daughter, Mr. W. F. Dale, Madera, on Friday, August 1, 1919. She died after an illness lasting over a period of six months at the advanced age of 88 years and two weeks. Up until the time of her final illness she had enjoyed excellent health. To those who had the inestimable privilege of personally knowing Mrs. Van Scoyoc, no eulogy is necessary. Her acquaintance was large, her friends many, her life so completely rounded so manifestly upright, that to know her was an education, an uplift into better and broader thinking. A woman of keen mind and quick perception, which she retained until the very end. She was born at Newton Hamilton, July 18th, 1833, and came with her parents, the late Benjamin and Barbara Bowman, in 1846 to Cambria County, locating in what was then known as the Glasgow settlement, now Reade township, and has since been a resident of this section. In her early girlhood she united with the Baptist congregation and has since been a staunch adherent of that faith, letting her "light to shine that o hers might see" during her long life. She was united with John Van Scoyoc, May 3rd, 1852. A perfect union, the love pledged that day grew with each succeeding year and was the beautiful part of the home life. To this couple came nine children, splendid men and women, fit descendants of a worthy pair. All of these children survive: George L. of Fallentimber; John Walter, Fallentimber; T. Judson, Tyrone; Harry J., at home; Maud E. Dale, Madera; Nancy E. Waple, at home; Kate S. Dale, Bloomfield, New Jersey; William C., Tyrone; Frank W. Akron, Ohio. Also twenty-nine grandchildren. Three of the former and one of the latter served their country during the world's war, and her desire was to live until they had safely returned. This wish was granted when the Sunday preceding her death, James B. Van Scoyoc, the last one overseas, returned and visited his grandmother at Madera.
