Charles was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in Marine Corps Reserve in 1951 and served as an Anti-tank Platoon Leader, Rifle Platoon Leader and Regimental Special Services Officer in the 5th Marine Regiment during the Korean War. He was a Captain in the Williamsport Marine Corps Reserve prior to accepting an active duty commission in the Army. Between active service in the Marine Corps and the Army, he taught school for several years at South Williamsport and Lock Haven Junior High Schools.
