1482 | Word has reached the Mountaineer-Herald of the death of the venerable John VanScoyoc, one of the oldest and most respected residents of Reade township, Cambria county, who passed away about 12 o'clock Saturday night after an illness from diseases due to advanced age. He was the son of John and Mary Hutchinson VanScoyoc, and was born near Tipton on a farm February 22, 1829. His grandfather was one of Blair county's pioneer settlers. In 1848 the family moved to Mountaindale, where they took up a new tract of land and built up the comfortable home which is still the family homestead. For some years John followed the vocation of a school teacher. During the Civil War he enlisted serving as a guardsman at Fortress Monroe until his honorable discharge. He was united in marriage in 1852 with Miss Susan C. Bowman who survives him with nine children born to the union, there having been no break in the immediate family until now. The children are: George L. of Frugality; John Walter of Blandburg; Thomas Judson of Tyrone; Harry J. at home; Mrs. Maude Dale of Madera; Mrs. Nan E. Waple, at home; Mrs. Kate Dale of Bloomfield, N.J.; William Carey of Tyrone and Frank W. of Pitcairn. He leaves one sister Mrs. Rebecca Franklin in Iowa. Two brothers and one sister preceded him to the grave, viz: Rev. Thomas VanScoyoc, David VanScoyoc and Mrs. James McCartney, all of Mountaindale. He had been a consistent member of the Baptist church of Mountaindale since early manhood and the influence of a good Christian life was ever manifested in his association with his kin and friends. The comfortable mountain home was always open to the stranger who found his travels took him that way and his kindly manner and generous heartedness earned for him the highest respect and reverence of all who knew him. Funeral services which had not been completed will be held at the late home near Glasgow. Interment at that place. (Mountaineer-Herald June 15, 1916) | Van Scoyoc, John A (I5328)
