1151 | Pete was the last one to farm the Pletcher farm before it was taken over by the Army Corps of Engineers. He was the last of those evicted by the Sayers Dam project to leave his home. He received his eviction notice 12 Dec 1967 (5 days before his 75th birthday) and had to be out by 2 Jan 1968. Anything remaining on the property would then become the property of the US government. The electricity and telephone were turned off. The hold up was that his new home was not completed; that contractor was building 7 different homes for those losing theirs to the project. In addition to losing his farm, Pete was also on the board of trustees for Schenck Cemetery, which was also being relocated. His nephew, his nephew's in-laws, and his sister were also losing their farms/homes to the project. Prior to relocation Pete had never lived anywhere other than the Pletcher farm where he had been born. | Pletcher, Oscar McEntire (I2830)

1166 | PORT ARTHUR NEWS - May 18, 1975, Port Arthur, Texas Mary Holter is retiring after 45 years as church organist for the United Methodist Temple – and she hopes, as she explains with a twinkle in her eye, "to be remembered not for how long I played but for how well." A reception honoring the departing musician will be held from 2.30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the fellowship hall of the United Methodist Temple, 4101 Hwy. 73. The chancel choir of the church is host for the event. Born in 1900, the 75-year-old Mrs. Holter began playing piano when she was seven years old. As a teenager, she played the reed organ at the small Baptist church in Connecticut where her father was minister and went on to obtain a liberal arts degree at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. She began her 45-year-long association with music in Port Arthur in 1928, when she and her husband came to the city from Bayonne, New Jersey. Mrs. Holter became organist at the First Presbyterian Church; then moved to what was then the First Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1930 (now the United Methodist Temple). The petite organist has seen the church organ rebuilt twice and renovated at least three other times and has seen at least seven church choir directors come and go. "There’s a great difference between a church organ and the popular electronic organ," Mrs. Holter explained, in talking of the diminishing number of serious church musicians. "Very few people are seriously going into the church music field – it requires much dedication," she said. "Also, you have to be pretty careful about the type of music you play for a congregation. Popular music would rarely lie acceptable." Retirement will be pleasant for Mrs. Holter, she says, as she plans to play the piano for pleasure. Active in Port Arthur music circles, she taught piano and organ lessons for many years, and only recently gave up her teaching. She is a member of the Community Concert Board, the Symphony Club, Port Arthur Music Teachers Association, and was dean for two years of the now disbanded local chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She and her husband, Cameron, a retired Texaco chemical engineer, have three daughters, Mary Lou (Mrs. J. R. Chamblee), Pawhuska, Oklahoma; Ruth (Mrs. B. V. Robins), Atlanta, Georgia; and Carol (Mrs. Gary Westley), Knoxville, Tennessee; and six grandchildren. Contributor: PalmTreeGothic (49243428) | Reed, Rachel Mary (I165)

1179 | Purple Heart recipient USNR WORLD WAR II Seaman 2nd Class, Milton A. Wimple MIA/KIA Hometown: Ohio Official Date of Death 20-Oct-43 Service # 6226326 Awards: Purple Heart Master: Lars Jorgensen MIA/KIA Mission: Convoy ON-137 (straggler) Ship: American Steam merchant "Steel Navigator" Loss Date: 19-Oct-42 Location: 49.45N, 31.20W - Grid BD 2862 North Atlantic Fate: Sunk by U-610 Walter Freiherr von Freyberg-Eisenberg-Allmendingen Complement: 52 (36 dead and 16 survivors). At 19.46 hours on 19 Oct, 1942, the Steel Navigator (Master Lars Jorgensen), a straggler from convoy ON-137, was torpedoed by U-610. The ship had been straggling since 17 October because the master feared a collision during foggy weather and was not able to find the convoy again due to a raging storm that caused the sand ballast to shift. She developed a 40° list, but the crew managed with the help of the armed guards to correct it to 12°. At 11.30 hours on 19 October, the first mate sighted an U-boat about 400 yards off the starboard beam, so the ship turned away and the gun crew fired two shots at the periscope. About eight hours later a torpedo struck between the #1 and #2 hatches, causing the vessel to settle rapidly by the head and to sink in three minutes after the boilers exploded. The eight officers, 28 crewmen and 16 armed guards (the ship was armed with one 5in and four 20mm guns) tried to abandon ship in two lifeboats and the motor boat, but the latter and one of the lifeboats swamped throwing their occupants into the sea, injuring five men fatally. The master and 17 of these men climbed onto rafts while others were picked up by the second lifeboat that was launched successfully. The Germans questioned the survivors in the boat before leaving the area. The 27 survivors in the boat managed to right the other lifeboat during the night and transferred ten men to it. The storm continued and separated the boats. Two officers, eight crewmen and six armed guards were picked up by HMS Decoy (H 75) (LtCdr G.I.M. Balfour, RN) seven days later after one other man having died in their boat. The survivors were so badly weakened that they were hospitalized for three weeks after being landed at Gourock. They were later repatriated on the British liner Queen Elizabeth, arriving on 10 December at Halifax and travelling to New York by train. Nothing was ever heard of the other boat, the rafts or the men aboard them. Personnel associated with this vessel Antonio F. Abad Merchant Marine Donald Gilbert Allen Merchant Marine John N. 1187 | Raymond R. “Ray” Bunnell, 85, passed away April 28, 2011, at his home in Ottumwa. Ray was born in Wapello County on Oct. 3, 1925, to Ralph and Mabel Hart Bunnell. He married Kathleen Murray on Sept. 23, 1950. Family members set up Mom and Dad on their first date. She preceded him in death March 25, 2005. Mom’s passing left a void in Dad’s life that was never filled. Dad retired after 33 years with the U.S. Postal Service, where we recently found out he was quite the prankster. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Spector, a minesweeper ship. Dad enjoyed fishing, bowling, camping, mushroom hunting, gardening and time spent with family and friends. Growing up, I can remember our family fishing trips — we would fish off many of the bridges in Southeast Iowa, trying to catch catfish. One vacation trip was to a resort that advertised outdoor entertainment. After a long trip to northern Iowa, we drove in to find a TV set up in a tree with rundown cabins. We made the long trip back home that evening only to start out the next day looking for a nicer resort. One of our excursions ended up with us staying in an old revamped chicken coop until one of the nicer cabins became available. Wonderful memories we have to hang on to. He was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation, O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Dad will be missed by his three daughters, Mary (Jerry) Andrews of Warsaw, Ill., Patty (Rich Marks) Bunnell and Sheila (Kenny) Jordan, all of Ottumwa; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Ruth (Jerry) Noel of Phoenix, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Billy Ray Bunnell; a sister, Irene Hirlinger; and a brother, Ralph Edward Bunnell. His body has been cremated. Graveside services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice, 927 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Ottumwa, Iowa 52501. | Bunnell, Raymond Richard (I577)
