1101 | Obituary from the Democratic Watchman & Centre Democrat, Bellefonte -- 12/24/1936 - Mrs. Eliza PLETCHER, Howard's oldest resident died at her home at 9 o'clock Wednesday night, of last week following a week's illness caused by pleurisy and a heart ailment. She was 84 years, 11 months and 8 days old at the time of her death. Mrs. PLETCHER was born one mile east of Howard January 8, 1852 a daughter of George and Elizabeth WELLS MEASE, both now deceased, and when a young girl moved with her family to Milesburg on a canal boat. She was married, January 16, 1872 to H. Shuman PLETCHER, who died in 1927. She had been an active member of the Howard Methodist church for 72 years. 1103 | Obituary: JOAO CORREIA FONTES, 100, of 2446 Highland Ave., a former employee at Berkshire Hathaway Mills, died yesterday at Catholic Memorial Home. He was the husband of the late Maria Gloria (Rego Coelho) Fontes. Born in Lagoa, the Azores, a son of the late Francisco and Estrella (Rocha) Fontes, he came to this country at age 21. Mr. Fontes was a communicant of Our Lady of Health Church. He leaves two sons, John Fontes of Uba City, Calif., and Manuel Fontes of Fall River; a daughter, Gloria Proulx of Fall River; 6 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Manuel and Antone Fontes, Mary Costa, Mary Morris and Mary Anjos. The funeral will be held Monday at 8 a.m. from A.F. Almeida & Son Funeral Home, 1309 Globe St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 in Our Lady of Health Church, Cambridge Street. 1110 | Olive J. Houdeshell, 88, of Marsh Creek, passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Susque-View Nursing Home in Lock Haven. She was born on July 14, 1921 in Howard Twp., the daughter of the late Jesse and Annie Baldwin Lucas. She married George Houdeshell on November 19, 1938. George preceded her in death on March 4, 1988. Olive was a homemaker and worked at Centre Crest Nursing Home in Bellefonte for a number of years. She was a member of the pleasant Valley United Methodist Church where she was a past Treasurer. Olive was also a member of the Pleasant Valley Ladies Aid. She enjoyed quilting, embroidering and spending time at the Grange Fair. Surviving are two daughters; Janice L. and husband Richard Thompson of Howard and Carol A. and husband Melvin Coakley of Beech Creek. A half sister; Sarah McCloskey of Buffalo, N.Y.; a half brother; Ardell Etters of Blanchard, 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, six brothers and her step-father, William Etters. The funeral will be Saturday, February 20, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Kader-Neff Funeral Home, 135 W. She was born August 19, 1933, in Lock Haven the daughter of the late Daniel and Gladys Seymour Reeder. While in high school Barb was a standout athlete and cheerleader. This is when she caught the eye and captured the heart of a young Kelsey Lomison. They were married on June 5, 1954 in the Orviston Bible Church and together they raised their family. Family was most important to the couple and they extended that love to the community in many ways. One of Barb's many achievements was cofounding the Lock Haven First Ward picnic, an annual event that still continues. She was an active member of the Beech Creek Wesleyan Church and a former member of the Orviston Bible Church. Barb loved the Bible and sharing God's word with others. If she were here she would say "Smile God loves you and so do we. John 3:16." She is survived by two sons, Wesley A. (Missy), of Orviston, and David W., of Milesburg; four grandchildren, Wesley Jr., Leslie D., both of Blanchard, David Jr. (Jessica), of Karthaus, and Breanna Wolfe (Joshua) of Centre Hall; one step-grandaughter, Leslie Scott (Chris) of Mill Hall, five great-grandchildren, Kaleb Lomison, Kamdyn Lomison, Sadie Wolfe, Dawson Lomison and Jack Wolfe, and one step-great-grandson, Brayden Scott. He and Martha were married in Cumberland, Maryland in December of 1916. He was the father of Catherine Hand, Robert William Bowers, Joel Philip Bowers, Betty Nail Hirsch, Michael Grant Bowers and Jane Bricker. He was a brakeman and conductor on the Pittsburgh Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad and lived in Bellwood, Pennsylvania at 609 North Tenth Street which had been his wife's childhood home. Survived by 31 grandchildren. His son, Robert, was killed on North Tuckahoe Street in Bellwood in a traffic accident that Joel witnessed. 1121 | Orvis S. "Skip" Kustanbauter, of Harrisburg, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011, at The Masonic Village, at Elizabethtown, at the age of 84. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 61 years, Helen Confer Kustanbauter. He was born September 13, 1926, the son of the late Edgar G., and Emaline J. Kustanbauter, in Bellefonte. Skip served in the U.S. Navy, from 1944 to 1946. He is a graduate from Penn State and retired from AMP, Inc., in 1986. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Harrisburg, taught Sunday School, served as lay leader and was a member of the choir. Following retirement, he sang with The Sentimentalists. He was a lifetime member of William S. Snyder Lodge #756, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Harrisburg Forest #43, Yellow Breeches Anglers & Conservation Assn., Harrisburg Hunters and Anglers, Pa. Fish and Game Commission, a member of the Nittany Lion Club, the American Legion and VFW and was a Lend-A-Hand volunteer, traveling to N.C. and Ia., for flood cleanup. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Anita Littlewolf of Sedalia, Co., and Susan Henderson of New Cumberland; two grandchildren, Matthew and Katelyn Schreffler of Mechanicsburg; two sisters, Sara Hoy of Howard, Pa., and Nancy Krape of Zion, Pa.; He is preceded in death by four siblings; Charles, Edgar, Jr., and Thomas Kustanbauter and Margaret Jamison. Visitation will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church, 4700 Locust Lane, Harrisburg, Pa., 17109, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., on Tuesday, July 19, 2011. 1122 | Ottumwa Courier November 11, 1946 Rights Held Today For Mr. Hirlinger Funeral services were held today for Clayton C. Hirlinger, 230 E. William St., who died Monday at the St. Joseph Hospital. The Rev. Bruce V. Matthews of The Davis Street Christian Church was in charge of the rights in the Johnson funeral Chapel at 3:30 PM with burial in Shaul cemetery. Masonic services were held at the grave and fellow Masons were pallbearers. Mr. Hirlinger was a prominent in Mason circles and was a railroader all of his life. Death comes to C. C. Hirlinger, 57 Clayton Christian Hirlinger, 57, 320 E. William St., died Monday at 5:30 PM at the St. Joseph Hospital. He was born June 19, 1889, at Fairmont Springs, Pennsylvania, and was the son of Andreas and Elizabeth Hirlinger. He spent the greater part of his life as a railroad brakeman and conductor, starting as a brakeman on the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad at Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. He spent several years with the Chicago & Alton railroad at Bloomington, Illinois, as a brakeman and conductor later going to the Wabash Railroad at Moberly, Missouri, where he spent several years in the train service and eight years as an automobile dealer. He later returned to train service on the Chesapeake & Ohio at Russell, Kentucky. In 1930 he began working for the C.B. & Q. railroad in Ottumwa where he was later crippled in an accident at Albia. Suffering the loss of his left leg. After the accident he started a coal business in Ottumwa. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 16, Ottumwa, Tancred Commandry No. 25 in Moberly, Missouri, Moberly chapter No. 79, Moberly Consistory of Western, Missouri No. 2, and the Ararat Temple of Kansas City Shrine, also of the order of Railway Conductors and of the Methodist Church and Fairview, Pennsylvania. He was married to Bernice Stansberry, May 4, 1914. Pasquale loved gardening, enjoyed Italian music, and was a hard worker. Most of all, Pasquale adored his family. Pasquale was the beloved husband of the late Maria (Pizzi) Ferrante. Loving father of Dominic and his wife Darlene of Carver, Angela Lawson of Plympton, and her late husband Charles Lawson. Dear brother of Maria, Filomena, Guiseppe, Angelina, Gaetano, and Antonio, all of Miranda, Italy. Devoted grandfather of Dominic Jr., Charles Jr., Dana, Jonathan, Deanna, and Dennis. 1139 | Patricia "Pat" L. McMurtrie September 3, 1937 - October 5, 2021 Bellefonte, Pennsylvania - Patricia "Pat" L. (King) McMurtrie, 84, of Bellefonte, passed away at home on Tuesday, October 5, 2021. Born on September 3, 1937, in Bellefonte, she was the daughter of the late Vincent J. and Evelyn A. (Corman) King. On May 27, 1955, she married her beloved husband, Gilbert "Gib" McMurtrie, who preceded her in death on December 24, 2008, after sharing over 53 years of marriage together. Pat was a graduate of Bellefonte High School. She worked many years at Wolf Furniture and retired as a teller from M&T Bank. She is survived by her two daughters, Tammy Leathers (Mark) of State College, and Jennifer James (Dave) of Pleasant Gap; three grandsons, Todd Leathers (Kristin) of Morris Plains, New Jersey, Tyler James (Jess) of Bellefonte, and Bryant James of Philadelphia; and three great grandchildren, Blake Rose Leathers, Jackson Gib James, and Vivian Arabella James. Also surviving is a brother, Ronald King of Bellefonte. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Nancy Shultz. Pat was a member of the Greater Buffalo Run Valley United Methodist Church. She enjoyed working in flower gardens, bowling, and especially enjoyed spending time with her friends at the YMCA and her Red Hat friends. More than anything else, family was the most important aspect of Pat's life. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She cherished the many memories that were made over the years with them – cooking for her family on Sundays, being their #1 cheerleader at their sporting events, the many family trips that were taken, and she would always look forward to the annual trip to the cottage in Ocean City, New Jersey. In honor of Pat's wishes, there will be no viewing, but a private memorial service held at the convenience of the family. 1140 | Patricia Yearick Hall of Howard, passed away on September 10, 2013 surrounded by her family at Centre Crest Nursing Home in Bellefonte where she had been a resident for the past 7 years. Her husband Gerald (Gerry) took care of her at home for 3 years prior to her admission. She was born on May 28, 1929 in her grandparent's home in Mt. Eagle. She was the only child of the late John King Yearick and Dorothy Glenn Yearick of Howard. She spend her youth in Howard and graduated from Howard High School in 1947. After high school she went to live with her aunt in NYC and attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School graduating in 1949. After graduation she came back to Howard and worked at Penn State University as a secretary. She then joined the Navy and was stationed in Atlantic City, NJ and Jacksonville, Fla. She was an aviation store keeper. While stationed in Jacksonville she met her husband Gerard T. of Queens, NY, who was also in the Navy. After being discharged from the Navy, she moved back to Howard and raised her oldest daughter till moving to Queens, NY. While living in New York she was very involved with her daughter's elementary school and her youngest daughter's nursery school. The whole family moved back to Howard, Pa. and she went to work at Bald Eagle Area High School where she worked as a secretary to the Superintendent of Schools. She then worked at the Howard Elementary School as the Librarian next, she went to work as the dispatcher at the PA State Police Barracks in Milesburg where she worked until her she retired. After retiring she spend lots of time with both of her daughter's various homes. She had a love of gardening, drawing, and painting, playing the piano, working on the family's genealogy, traveling, with one time going across the United States in a jeep with her youngest daughter to visit her oldest daughter in California. She also enjoyed the beach, yard sales, and Democratic functions. She also served as the secretary to the Centre County Democratic Party. In her spare time she played the piano and organ for the singing group "The Nine Notes". She was also a Sunday school teacher and choir director at the United Church of Christ in Howard. She also spent time being a Girl Scout Leader in Bellefonte and Howard. Patricia is survived by her husband Gerald T. of Howard, daughters Dorothy T. and her husband Lloyd A. Walker of Milesburg, and Gwendolyn H. and husband Don Holderman of Bellefonte, and only grandchild and the pride of her life, Emma Holderman from Bellefonte. 1141 | Paul A. Coder, 76, of Snydertown died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at Lock Haven Hospital, where he had been a patient since Sept. 14. Born Aug. 12, 1925, in Howard Township, he was a son of the late Albert B. and Nancy A. Schenck Coder. On June 3, 1944, in Winchester, Va., he married Anna Elizabeth Amelia Rockey, who died May 22, 2000.He attended Hublersburg High School. He entered the Army on July 3, 1944, serving as a private first class and performing as a rifleman in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the Bronze Battle Star and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon. He helped his father farm and later, with his wife, operated a dairy farm for more than 20 years. He was also employed at the Dye Works and Drake Chemical in Lock Haven and Neese Chemical in State College. In February 1997, he retired from the Pennsylvania Game Commission after 46 years of service as deputy game protector and hunter and trapper education instructor. He was a member of Lock Haven Assembly of God Church, the National Rifle Association and the Fraternal Order of Police, Bald Eagle Lodge 51. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and baseball. He is survived by two daughters, Connie A. Brininger of Nittany and Judy J. Coder of Mill Hall; two sons, Paul A. Jr. of Milesburg and Jay A. of Snydertown; five sisters, May L. Pletcher of Howard, Rebecca J. Metz of Conshohocken, Rachael E. Yarnell of Pleasant Gap, Nancy Jeannette Klein of Beloit, Wis., and Mary E. Pallo of Lewistown; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A sister preceded him in death. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at W. 1142 | Paul Daniel Thompson, 86, formerly of Howard, entered into rest at 10:25 a.m., Monday, October 27, 2014, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. He was a resident of Riverview Manor, Lewisburg, since April. He was born June 4, 1928, in Howard, a son of the late Charles Roy and Catherine (Holt) Thompson. In June 1953, he married the former Mary Louella Orr, who survives. Paul honorably served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He owned and operated Thompson Excavation, Howard. Earlier in life, he worked at Cerro Metal Products, Bellefonte. Paul was a member of the Howard V.F.W. Post 8269, the Beech Creek American Legion Post 623, and the Wildcat Hunting Club. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, watching the Philadelphia Phillies, and Penn State Nittany Lions football. Surviving in addition to his wife of 51 years, are four sons and three daughters-in-law, Larry and Carol Thompson, of Shepherd, Mont., Steven and Barb Thompson. of Corning,N.Y., Wayne Thompson and (companion) Jane, of Huntingdon, and Karl and Angie Thompson, of Huntingdon; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Donna and Douglas MacLean, of Centre Valley, Judy and Tom Ebeling, of Philipsburg, and Amy Ferguson, of Mifflinburg; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Earl Thompson, and Arlin and Sharon Thompson, all of Howard; one sister, Florence McClure, of Milesburg; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. 1144 | Paul E. Penrod, 80, of Six Mile Turn, died at 1:05 p.m. on Monday, February 23, 2015 at Genesis Care and Rehab of New Lexington. Born one of 10 children on May 10, 1934 to the late Eric and Annice (Wolfe) Penrod. Paul was a lifetime resident of Six Mile Turn; retired employee of Newark Air Force base; member of the Moxahala United Methodist Church and a member of the American Legion Post 188 out of New Lexington. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Paul was an avid outdoorsman, and loved traveling to Colorado with family and friends. He especially enjoyed going hunting with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed airplanes and attending airshows, he also with his brother James built and flew a homemade glider on the family farm. Survived by son, Greg (Cindy) Penrod of Crooksville, Ohio, daughter, Sheree (Bill) Lucas of Corning, Ohio, son, Michael Penrod of Bowling Green, Ohio; grandchildren, Eric (Catherine) Penrod, Luke (Michelle) Penrod, Amy (Paul) Wright and Angie (Davo) Fondale; nine great-grandchildren; Blake, Dylan, Bryanna, Ethan, Natalie, Elizabeth, Emily, Maddy and Aubrey; and brother, James Penrod of Crooksville. 1145 | Paul V. (Andy) Bechdel March 26, 1928 - December 20, 2011 Paul V. (Andy) Bechdel, 83, went to be with the Lord in the presence of his family on Dec. 20, 2011, at his home in Howard. He was born March 26, 1928, to Fred and Mabel (Confer) Bechdel. He was married to Berniece (Fisher) Bechdel, on April 4, 1949. Paul worked for Piper Aircraft in Lock Haven for 33 years. Then ran parts for Victor Auto Parts in Blanchard for 13 years. He was an avid member and supporter of the Howard Area Lion's Club and an active member of Curtin United Methodist Church. Paul is survived by his wife of 62 years, Berniece M. Fisher Bechdel, five children, Sandy Bechdel and her two children, Kristine and Jason Deitz, Donna (Bechdel) Martin and her husband, Steve, and their two children, Troy and Chastity Martin, P. Dennis Bechdel and his son, Cameron Bechdel, Charles Bechdel and his son, Chazzy Bechdel and Chet Bechdel and his wife, Cora Lee (Nyman), and their two children, Jason and Tara Bechdel; nine great grandchildren. 1146 | Paul W. `Brownie' Pletcher Sr. April 16, 1922 -- June 15, 2004 Paul W. "Brownie" Pletcher Sr., 82, of Blanchard, passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at Geisinger Medical Center. Born April 16, 1922, in Blanchard, he was the son of the late Hayes Allen Pletcher and Maude Dietz Pletcher. On Aug. 27, 1943, he married the late Dorothy M. Smith, who passed away in February 2002. The couple had three daughters and two sons. Paul W. PLETCHER, son of Hayes PLETCHER of Blanchard, was inducted into the Army in October, 1943. He received this training at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, then enjoyed a seven day furlough at home before going overseas in March, 1944. He arrived in Africa and two weeks later moved into Italy where he was in action until he helped to make the invasion of Southern France and is believed to be in that locality at present. She married Clarence Coffey, now deceased, in 1942, and Jerry T. Leathers on Feb. 23, 1946 in Howard. She is survived by her husband and four children, Sandra Rhoades of Howard, Paula McDanel and husband David of Fombell, Jerry Thomas Leathers and wife Francene of Camp Hill, and Natalie Nodianos and husband Dale of State College; five sisters, Betty Morasco of Flemington, Isabelle Rupert and Anna Wink, both of Lock Haven, and Lorraine McAulay and Gloria Gardner, both of Howard; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her first husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Eaton. She was a graduate of the Liberty Township School and attended Lock Haven High School. She attended Liberty Baptist Church in Blanchard. She was a social member of the Howard VFW and a founding member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Although she worked outside of the home in several capacities, she was first and foremost a dedicated and loving wife and mother. She enjoyed reading, solving crossword puzzles, crocheting, and playing video games in her spare time. Her concern, thoughtfulness, and sense of humor will be fondly remembered by a large circle of family and friends.
